Course: Operations/Departmental Manager Apprenticeship

Duration: 24 months plus 3 months for gateway

  • Course Outline

    The apprentice will undergo a 24 month apprenticeship training programme (plus an extra 3 months for the gateway) at Level 5. This Apprenticeship is for someone who manages teams and/or projects. It is applicable to Operations Managers, Regional Managers, Divisional Managers, Department Managers or Specialist Managers.


    On Programme Training
    This will consist of completion and achievement of the ILM L5 Diploma in Leadership & Management, a work based project (undertaken in the last 6 months), development of a portfolio of evidence, regular performance reviews and feedback from a qualified assessor.

    Assessment Gateway
    The End-point Assessment will test the entire Standard and takes place at the end of the apprenticeship. The employer and on programme assessor will formally review and sign to confirm that the apprentice has met the minimum requirements within the Standard and are ready to move on to the end assessment.

    End-point Assessment
    The End-point Assessment consists of five assessment methods, all pass criteria must be achieved to progress and complete the apprenticeship programme. The five assessment methods are:
    Knowledge Test – the knowledge requirements within the Standard will be tested using a structured series of questions and is likely to be delivered online as a multiple-choice test.

    Structured Competency Based Interview – An independent assessor will use a series of structured questions to assess the apprentice’s knowledge to ensure all aspects are given coverage.

    Portfolio of Evidence – An online portfolio of evidence will be produced over the period of the apprenticeship and will provide evidence of the apprentice’s ability to apply and demonstrate management and leadership concepts.

    Presentation on Work based Project with Q&A Session – The 15-minute presentation focuses on the outcomes of the work based project. It will be given to a panel comprising of the independent assessor, on programme assessor and employer. This will be followed by a series of competency based questions put to them by the panel.

    Professional Discussion Relating to CPD Activity– the apprentice will provide evidence of any additional learning/CPD undertaken during the apprenticeship. The Independent Assessor will undertake a professional discussion with the apprentice to identify the objective of the activity, and reflect on the outcome and how learning was applied.


    The apprenticeship includes Pass, Merit and Distinction grades.

    Additional Requirements

    Apprentices will be required to have or to achieve Level 2 English and Maths prior to the End-point Assessment.

    Professional Body Recognition

    Completion of this apprenticeship will lead to eligibility to join the Chartered Management Institute and/or the Institute of Leadership & Management as a member, to support professional career development and progression.
