Overview

The Level 2 (NVQ) Diploma in Barbering is based on the National Occupational Standards for Barbering. It is a job ready qualification which requires learners to demonstrate in the workplace the skills and knowledge required in the barbering industry. This qualification attests to occupational competence and the job readiness of the learner.

Requirements

The uniform for barbers at GHQ is black and white only (no denim) and ‘closed-in’ comfortable shoes.

• Learners will be supported to source models when required

• Learners will need to complete homework

• Products and resources will be provided for use in sessions

• Learners will be supported with work experience and career opportunities

A suggested kit list will be provided for learners should they wish to purchase to enhance their skills and progression.

Things to consider

Learners who achieve this qualification are eligible to become a State Registered Graduate Barber (SRGB) with The Hair Council and join the British Barbers' Association. As a junior barber, learners could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

- commercial barber shops or salons
- specialist African type barber shops/salons
- independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- television, film, theatre and media
- armed services
- HM prison service
- cruise liners
- hospitals/care homes

Cohort Dates & Length of Programme

Duration of this Level 2 Diploma in Barbering course is 12 months (or less depending on the individual).

Units

There are 7 mandatory units that must be completed plus a minimum The mandatory units are:

• Cut facial hair to shape using basic techniques (5 credits)

• Dry and finish men’s hair (5 credits)

• Create basic outlines and details in hair (6 credits)

• Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp (5 credits)

• Develop and maintain effectiveness at work (3 credits)

• Advise and consult with clients (8 credits)
